Week #4 Rules Tip: More about Goalie in the Crease‏

2013-04-17
In week two, we wrote about the restrictions and responsibilities of the goalie while in the crease. Of course, the crease also imparts important privileges to the goalie If the goalie has any part of his body in the crease: He may stop (but not pick up or catch) the ball with his hand, if the ball is within the crease cylinder. No opponent may contact the goalie (with or without possession). No opponent may interfere with the goalieís outlet pass or normal follow-thru. However, there are some close calls to make which can lead to a storm of protest if you donít know the rules or canít explain them. I f the goalie has possession, with a foot in the crease, he and his stick may not be checked. BUT, if he DOESNíT have possession, that portion of his stick (not body) which is out of the crease may be checked (within 5 yds. of the loose ball) Remember: If the goalie is clamping or raking a loose ball on the ground, he DOES NOT have possession. An attacking player may play a loose ball in the crease, but in so doing, he may not check or contact the goalieís stick in the crease. However, if the goalie checks the attacking stick, there is no foul . By request on another topic: With a stall warning in effect (last 2 min. or otherwise) if a loose ball rolls into the attack box and out again without being touched by the defense, the stalling call applies. Itís a play-on if the defense is ready to pick it up, but make it a quick one: Timeís-a-wasting. I was going to write this up as a topic, but itís explicitly covered by 6.10.3 SITUATION A.
